Variability in the quiescent state of neutron star transients

چکیده
Variability studies represent a powerful tool to assess the emission mechanism(s) at work in the quiescent state of transient low mass X–ray binaries. Here we report on Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of two well known transient sources: Aql X-1 and Cen X-4. Long and short term variability is observed. This variability can be easily interpreted in view of an active millisecond radio pulsar emitting X–rays at the shock between a radio pulsar wind and inflowing matter from the companion star.

New Results on Neutron Star Low Mass Transients in the Quiescence
We review the main observational properties of neutron star low mass transients in quiescence. We first survey the discoveries of BeppoSAX. We then focus on recent discoveries by Chandra and XMM-Newton, with special emphsasis on the detection of the quiescent counterpart of SAX J1808.4–3658 and the study of variability in the quiescent state.
متن کاملThe Evolution of the High Energy Tail in the Quiescent Spectrum of the Soft
A moderate level of variability has been detected in the quiescent luminosity of several neutron star soft X– ray transients. Spectral variability was first revealed by Chandra observations of Aql X-1 in the four months that followed the 2000 X–ray outburst. By adopting the canonical model for quiescent spectrum of soft X–ray transients, i.e. an absorbed neutron star atmosphere model plus a pow...
متن کاملConstraints on the Steady-state R-mode Amplitude in Neutron Star Transients
Recent observations suggest that neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries rotate within a narrow range of spin frequencies clustered around 300Hz. A proposed explanation for this remarkable fact is that gravitational radiation from a steady-state r-mode oscillation in the neutron star’s core halts the spin-up due to accretion. For the neutron star transients, balancing the time-averaged accreti...
متن کاملThe Quiescent Emission Spectrum of Cen X-4 and Other X-ray Transients Containing Neutron Stars
We use the observed optical-UV and X-ray emission spectrum of Cen X-4 during quiescence to constrain models for the accretion flow in this system. We argue that the optical-UV emission is not due to an optically-thick quiescent accretion disk, nor due to synchrotron emission from an Advection-Dominated Accretion Flow (ADAF). Emission from the bright spot could account for the observed optical-U...
متن کاملEmission processes in quiescent neutron star transients
We review the observational properties of transient systems made by a neutron star primary and a late dwarf companion (known also as Soft X–ray Transients) during their quiescent state. We focus on the several emission mechanisms proposed and try to compare them with observations. Finally, we review new tools to improve our comprehension of the physics of the emission processes. WHAT ARE NEUTRO...
